Golden julie

The Yellow Schlankcichlide or Striped Tanganjikabarsch ( Julidochromis ornatus ) is a cichlid from Africa.

Occurrence and habitat

Julidochromis ornatus is endemic and inhabited the rocky shore of Lake Tanganyika. The water temperature is 26-28 ° C. In addition, the water is slightly alkaline (pH 7.0-8.0 ).

Features

The length of the fish is about 8 cm. Gender differences are not very pronounced. The female is slightly smaller than the male. Furthermore, particular Unterwürfigkeitsverhalten (eg bending ) can be observed in the female, as the male is very aggressive.

Sexual behavior and breeding

The female lays about 20-50 eggs in a cave, whereupon the young hatch after 48 hours of incubation. The juveniles stay long in the vicinity of the spawning place, and be protected by their parents ( until the next spawn ). It may also arise hybrids between species Julidochromis ornatus and Julidochromis marlieri ( checkerboard Schlankcichlide ), but they are barren. The hybrids remember Julidochromis transcriptus ( Black White Schlankcichlide ).

Attitude as an ornamental and farmed fish

The Yellow Schlankcichlide is kept as ornamental fish. It should be ensured that there is enough space (about 50-100 l for a couple). In addition, the fish is aggressive towards other as well as towards its own kind, so he should not be kept in a community tank.
