Gongshan muntjac

The Gongshan - Muntjac ( Muntiacus gongshanensis ) is a species of muntjac from the deer family. It occurs only in a small part of the Chinese Yunnan province and the bordering Myanmar.

Features

The head-body length of Gongshan - Muntjac is 95 to 105 centimeters, the tail length of 9-16 cm. The shoulder height is 55 to 57 centimeters. Individual weights of animals is 17-40 kg. The animals are medium sized with long, slender legs. They have a dark reddish-brown fur and an orange -brown coloration on the head. They correspond to the black muntjac ( Muntiacus crinifrons ), differ from the latter by the slightly lighter color, the smaller size and shorter tail and longer hooves. In addition, the approach of the antlers is short and thick and it has no striking tufts of hair. On the feet, this species has a white ring.

Skull characteristics

The skull has a total length of 190-205 millimeters. Like all muntjac has the kind in the maxilla per half a canine ( canine ), three Vorbackenzähne ( Praemolares ) and three molars ( Molar ), incisors are absent. Genetic features

The genome of Gongshan - Muntjac consists of a very small number of chromosomes: The males have a diploid chromosome complement of 2n = 9 chromosomes, whereas it is in the females 2n = 8. For comparison, the Chinese muntjac 2n = 46 chromosomes.

Dissemination

The Gongshan - Muntjac is found only in a small part in the extreme northwest of Yunnan Province and the adjacent northern Myanmar.

Way of life

The Gongshan - Muntjac is classified as a separate species within the muntjac ( genus Muntiacus ), which consists of eleven species. The first scientific description comes from Shilay Ma in 1990, who described the nature of the municipality in the district of Puladi Gongshan in Yunnan Province and named according to the origin. Within the species, no further addition to the nominate subspecies Muntiacus gongshanensis gongshanensis be distinguished.
