Gonzalo Parra-Aranguren

Gonzalo Parra Aranguren - ( born December 5, 1928 in Caracas ) is a Venezuelan lawyer. He was from 1956 to 1996 professor at the Universidad Central de Venezuela and belonged from 1996 to 2009 as a judge of the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Life

Gonzalo Parra Aranguren - studied until 1950 Law and Political Sciences at the Universidad Central de Venezuela and subsequently completed until 1952 postgraduate studies in comparative law at New York University. In 1955 he received his PhD at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich. A year later he became a professor at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, where he taught private international law until 1996. In addition, he taught from 1957 to 1996 at the Catholic University in Caracas and in 1988 at the Hague Academy of International Law.

From 1958 he worked as a judge in various courts of his home country. Through its participation in relevant committees he had influence on the design of the Venezuelan Constitution and to the law of the country in the area of business law and the conflict of laws norms in the field of private law. In addition, he represented Venezuela 1976-1993 at several meetings of the Hague Conference on Private International Law. Both in Venezuela and abroad, he worked as an agent at the international level especially in the area of business law disputes. In various countries, he acted in court as an expert on Venezuelan law.

Since 1985 he is a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. On February 28, 1996, he was elected judge of the International Court of Justice. He succeeded his compatriot Andres Aguilar Mawdsley, who had the court been a member since 1991, died on 25 October 1995 before the end of his nine -year tenure. In November 1999, Gonzalo Parra Aranguren - was re-elected for a nine year term as scheduled, he graduated from February 2000 to February 2009.

In 1979 he was appointed a member of the Institut de Droit international, moreover, it is nonresident or a corresponding member of several foreign academies and learned societies in the field of political science and international law.
