Reasons for the Nexus series

2008 HTC introduced the HTC Dream, the first Android smartphone on the market. Later followed by numerous other manufacturers with Android devices and missed this often its own user interface and other preinstalled software. One reason for these modifications is the one hand, to be able to aside from the actual hardware of the devices from other manufacturers stand out. Frequently, however, the manufacturer will also get money for pre-installed software.

This approach does not appeal to any user, because often " overloaded " by the number of additional software, the devices act or be carriers by the additional user interface and programs that run constantly in the background. In addition, many manufacturers are hesitant to newer versions of Android with updates to their devices.

To counter these problems, brought Google in January 2010 with the Nexus One, the first own smartphone in the Nexus series products out. The Nexus series is characterized particularly by the fact that:

  • No software is pre-installed other than its own from Google and
  • Is promised a speedy way to install a newer version of Android.

Production

Since Google but to the acquisition of Motorola Mobility was not a separate hardware manufacturers and thus lacked the ability to own production of Nexus devices, contract manufacturers took over this role. For the realization of works for Google each month previously closely with one of these contract manufacturers together, since the respective latest device also mostly at the same time introduces a new Android version, whereby the corresponding manufacturer has to leave access to the Android code. To favor any manufacturer, whereby others could eventually withdraw from Android, Google changed from the contract manufacturer. However, the current selection met the already established smartphone or tablet manufacturers like HTC, Asus, LG and Samsung, the latter even more than once. Since the acquisition of Motorola fear many manufacturers, Google could forego future entirely on the production of the Nexus series by contract manufacturers and thus giving them an advantage over.

Distribution

The first Nexus device was first marketed directly nor exclusively via a specially bridged by Google homepage. However, the sales numbers were limited, so Google already stopped selling again half a year later in June 2010. The market research firm Flurry saw the reason for the poor sales in the exclusive distribution only via a website, which potential customers could not watch or try out the equipment before. Accordingly counter said former Google CEO Eric Schmidt in an interview with the Telegraph that Google did with the Nexus One reached its goal to further advance the Android platform, and therefore no other Nexus devices will bring more to the market.

Nevertheless, the next Nexus device, which was also regularly distributed through the sale appeared in stores in December 2010 with the Nexus S already. Since 2012, the instruments are also sold through Google 's own platform Google Play.
