Gordon Gray (cardinal)

Cardinal Joseph Gordon Gray ( born August 10, 1910 in Edinburgh, Scotland, † July 19, 1993 ibid ) was Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh.

Life

Gordon Joseph Gray studied in Edinburgh and Wonersh the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology. He received on 15 June 1935, the sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked as a parish pastor in various parishes of the Archdiocese of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh. From 1947 to 1951 he served as rector of the Saint Mary 's College, Blairs, Aberdeen.

1951 Pope Pius XII appointed him. Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh and received on 21 September 1951, the episcopal consecration by Cardinal William Godfrey. Gordon Joseph Gray took part in the years 1962-1965 at the Second Vatican Council. Pope Paul VI. took him on 28 April 1969 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Chiara a Vigna Clara to the College of Cardinals. Cardinal Joseph Gordon Gray ran for many years the Scottish Bishops' Conference. He died on 19 July 1993 in Edinburgh and was buried in the crypt of the local Metropolitan Basilica.
