Goris

Goris (Armenian Գորիս; Горис Russian ) is a town in the Armenian province of Syunik, located about 250 km from the capital Yerevan and 70 km from the provincial capital Kapan.

Goris was given the rank of a city in 1885 in what was then the Russian Empire. The city has 23 019 inhabitants according to the calculation from 2009, is located 1,370 m above sea level. The town lies in a valley of the river Vararak, surrounded by high sandstone mountains. A characteristic feature of the city is a rectangular street course.

Worth seeing are some restored townhouses. A museum in honor of the Armenian poet Axel Bakunz invites you to visit. A good overview of the basin have been identified by the city Jerankatar mountain. Other attractions in the vicinity are the old Armenian monastery Tatev and the rock caves of Chndsoresk.

Goris is a regional industrial center, although followed by an economic decline after the Karabakh war in which the city is still suffering. In the streets of the devastation caused can not be overlooked. Given the increasing foreign visitors - mostly Armenian origin Americans - is working hard on the tourist infrastructure. There are a hotel with European standards as well as several B & B available.

Goris is a regional transport hub. Through the city's highway M2 Yerevan runs over the 2480m high Tashtunpass after Tabriz in Iran. She is currently the only connection between the two countries. In Goris branches off from this road from the strategically important M12, leading to Stepanakert ( Xankəndi ) in Nagorno-Karabakh.
