The book prints Owl ( Naenia typica ), also called Adereule, is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of cutworms ( Noctuidae ).

Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the butterfly is 36 to 46 mm, the females are usually much larger. The forewings are dark brown to gray- brown. The white veins stand out significantly from the base color, as well as the double transverse lines. Kidney and ring are bright blemish border. Between these there is a striking black-brown field. The dark blemish Zapf are often formed indistinct. In Saumfeld some short, dark arrow spots can be seen. The hind wings are tinted black-brown without markings.

Egg, caterpillar and chrysalis

The egg is spherical and flattened on the base. It is violet colored with longitudinal ribs 12 on the surface. Adults caterpillars vary to blue-gray in color from brown gray. They are yellowish on the ventral side and have on the sides bright slashes. The doll is a red-brown color and two long, curved spines at the end and on each side two fine hooks on the cremaster rounded.

Similar Species

The respect of the drawing comparable Netzeule ( Sideridis reticulata ) has, like the similar Weißgerippte Lolcheule ( Tholera decimalis ) narrower and more elongated forewings and lighter colored hind wings.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is widespread in Western Europe including the British Isles by the temperate zones to Siberia. In the south, it occurs through the northern Mediterranean, the Balkans, parts of Turkey and further on the Northern Iran to Central Asia ( Issyk -Kul, Kyrgyzstan ). In the mountains it rises up to 1200 meters altitude. The Book Owl Prints is preferable to find in damp habitats, as in stream valleys and floodplains, wet meadows, and on lake shores.

Way of life

The Book Owl Prints forms in one generation per year; the moths fly from June to September. The moths are nocturnal, like to suck on various flowers, such as on Turk's Cap Lily (Lilium martagon ) or rear cherry species ( Lonicera ). They also appear to artificial sources of light and love to come to the bait. As a food the caterpillar serves a variety of different food plants. These include

  • Willow ( Salix),
  • Field elm (Ulmus minor),
  • Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica),
  • Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) and
  • Common ash (Fraxinus excelsior).

Young caterpillars initially live in groups and individually later in September. They pupate after hibernation in May of the following year in a hole in the ground.

Endangering

In Germany the book Prints Owl is widespread and locally as proliferates, so that it is classified in the Red List of Threatened Species as not at risk.
