Gottfried Lindauer

Gottfried Lindauer, also known as Gottfried or Bohumír Lindaur Lindaur ( born January 5, 1839 in Plzeň, † June 13, 1926, Woodville, New Zealand ) was a Czech- New Zealand painter. He was known primarily as a portrait painter for his illustrations of several Maori chiefs in New Zealand. His images are partially detailed documentation of the traditional clothing of the Māori, whose jewelry, weapons and the Tā moko. Also known for such representations was the New Zealand painter CF Goldie.

Life

Lindauer was born in 1839. From 1855 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Léopold Kupelwieser and Joseph of Fiihrich.

To avoid being drafted into the Army Joint he traveled to Germany in 1873 and emigrated the following year via Hamburg to New Zealand, where it reached Wellington on 6 August 1874.

Lindauer died in 1926 and was buried at the Gorge Cemetery in Woodville.
