Gottlieb August Wilhelm Herrich-Schäffer

Gottlieb August Wilhelm Herrich -Schäffer ( born December 17, 1799 in Regensburg, † April 14, 1874 ) was a physician, district court physician and well-known entomologist.

Life and work

Gottlieb August Herrich -Schäffer collected and sold by the way insects, especially butterflies ( Lepidoptera). Parts of his collection went on Otto Staudinger at the Zoological Museum in Berlin and MJ Berger craft at the Zoological State Collection Munich. Many Microlepidoptera the collection went on Ottmar Hofmann at the British Museum ( Natural History ).

From 1861 to 1871 he was chairman of the rain Freiburgische Botanical Society.

In addition to his continuation of carapace " Fauna insectorum Germaniae " (issue 111-190, Regensburg from 1830 to 1844 ), he wrote a " Nomenclator entomologicus " ( Thl. 1 and 2, Regensburg 1835-40 ), the " Systematic processing of the butterflies of Europe "(Vol. 1-6 with engravings, Regensburg 1843-56 ) and continued ," continued the bug -like insects " by Carl Wilhelm Hahn (Volume 4-9, Nuremberg 1839-1853 ).
