Gottlieb Rabener

Gottlieb Wilhelm Rabener (* September 17, 1714 at Manor Wachau, Leipzig, † March 22, 1771 in Dresden ) was a German writer and publicist of the Enlightenment.

Life

One prominent family entstammend, he studied post-school at the Prince's School St. Afra in Meissen law and philosophy in Leipzig. After completing his studies he worked as a tax auditor in Leipzig as tax collectors and from 1741. In 1753 he was appointed as part of his official duties as a consultant to Dresden.

During his time in Leipzig, he wrote articles for various magazines, mostly satirical or essayistic form. It was because of his writing style often called the " German Swift", probably because he later approached to the style of the English weeklies.

Rabe former prose satire in the form of short novels, letters, poems, and proverbs, in which he also social grievances of the bourgeoisie treated human error satirical, was widely published in magazines. His publications he gave in the 1750s under the title collection of satirical writings as a collection out, which should ultimately comprise four volumes. This publication is learned within a few years several editions and also appeared among others in Danish, French, English and Swedish.

Gottlieb Wilhelm Rabener died 1771 in Dresden, after a spa stay in Karlovy Vary his health could not help. He was buried in the Johanniskirchhof. His grave is not obtained. Rabener is forgotten today. In Dresden, the addresses of tax offices are named after the tax collector II and III: 1 Rabenerstraße
