Gougane Barra

Gougane Barra (Irish Guagán Barra, " the crevice of [ Fionn - ] Barra " ) is a small settlement west of Macroom in County Cork, Ireland.

The name Guagán Barra goes back to the Holy Finbarr (Irish Fionnbarra ), is said to have built in the 6th century on an island in a neighboring lake a monastery. The surviving ruins date from about the beginning of the 18th century; 1700 fled the priest Denis O'Mahony on the island. During the Penal Laws Gougane Barra came the remoteness benefit, and here many Roman Catholic masses were celebrated.

West of Gougane Barra stems from the River Lee. Since 1938 the area of Gougane Barra is reforested; here now, there is a 1.42 km ² large forest area. A Clapper Bridge over the River Lee is located nearby.
