Govan Shipbuilders

Govan Shipbuilders Ltd was a British shipbuilding company on the River Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland.

History

The company was established in 1972 through the acquisition and integration of the city on the Clyde shipyards Fairfield Shipbuilders, Alexander Stephen and Sons, Charles Connell & Company, Yarrow Shipbuilders and John Brown & Company in the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders Shipyard Group.

The former shipyard Charles Connell & Company was operated 1973-1980 under the name Scotstoun Marine Ltd, a subsidiary of Govan Shipbuilders.

On July 1, 1977 Govan Shipbuilders was incorporated in the State British Shipbuilders Corporation. Between 1973 and 1988 a total of 53 ships were completed Shipbuilders at Govan Shipbuilders on the site of the former Fairfield. In 1988, the sale to the Kvaerner Group and the re-privatization under the name Kvaerner Govan Ltd was. As Kvaerner Govan Ltd was sold to British Aerospace in 1999, BAE Systems was formed. From Marconi Marine ( YSL ) BAE Systems was Marine ( YSL ). As of 2008, the traditional Yarrows shipyard is now, formerly operated as part of the BAT Surface Fleet, a joint venture between BAE Systems and VT Group Vosper Thornycroft.

Govan Shipbuilders Scotstoun Marine and built mainly two types of ships in greater numbers, bulk of the Cardiff - class and general cargo ships of Kuwait class.
