Grafton is a town in Worcester County and is located in the state of Massachusetts in the United States.

Geography

The city is located 8 kilometers south-east of Worcester, 50 kilometers southwest of Boston and about 80 kilometers northeast of Springfield as well as directly on the Interstate 90 highway, which is there called the Massachusetts Turnpike.

History

The region of present-day Grafton was originally inhabited by the Nipmuckindianern, who called it Hassanamisco (place of small stones = place of small stones ). Already in 1671 tried to convert the native population to Christianity, the English missionary John Elliot. Beginning of the 18th century were the first European settlers in the area and Grafton was founded in 1735. The name was chosen in honor of Charles FitzRoy, 2nd Duke of Grafton (son of Henry FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Grafton ). After that developed a number of industries, and the city became an important pioneer in the industrialization of the country.

In 1955 the United States Air Force, a large forge in North Grafton in operation, among other things, also produced parts for the space shuttle.
