Gletscherbär ( Grammia quenseli )

The Gletscherbär ( Grammia quenseli ) is a butterfly (moth ) from the subfamily of the tiger moths ( Arctiinae ).

Description

The moths reach a wingspan of 26-42 millimeters. Their forewings are black with different widths, light yellow redrawn wing veins. In females, these veins are colored richer. The hind wings are dark gray to black and end up a little stronger yellow drawing.

The caterpillars are about 30 mm long. They are black and have a fine, bright topline. You have the back black, yellow pages warts, from which springs each have a tuft of dense, thick hair. The hair is black gray on the back, on the sides and light downwards into reddish brown as possible.

Occurrence

The animals come in Central Europe in the Central Alps 2000-2700 meters above sea level on grassy alpine mats and boulder fields before and are very rare. You do not also occur in northern Scandinavia, in Germany, however.

Way of life

They are diurnal, but the females fly only at warm temperatures.

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various low- alpine plants such as:

  • Alps - plantain ( Plantago alpina)

In breeding, they also eat like denGewöhnlichen Dandelion ( Taraxacum sect. Ruderalia )

Course of development

The females leave their eggs easily fall from the air. The resulting hatching caterpillars hide during the day under stones, and only come out at night to feed. After they overwinter twice they pupate in a very firm and interspersed with plant parts dream, unlike any other alpine tiger moth species that pupate under stones.
