Grand Hotel Europe

The Grand Hotel Europe (Russian Гранд Отель Европа ) is a luxury hotel in the Russian capital Saint Petersburg. It was founded in 1875 and is still one of the most famous and prestigious hotels of Russia. The hotel building is also a striking architectural monument of the 19th century.

The hotel is located in the St. Petersburg city center close to Nevsky Prospekt on the side street Michailowskaja.

History

The hotel building was originally built as an apartment house, which stood directly on Nevsky Prospekt. This first building was erected in the year 1824. By 1830, the building was supplemented by an extension to the Michailowskaja Street and provided with a common facade, the renowned architect Carlo Rossi Petersburg had designed.

The early 1870s, the building was purchased by the newly formed joint-stock company Hotel Jewropeiskaja 1873-1875 and completely rebuilt. At this time the building was built in its present form, in an art nouveau -like design after design by architect Ludwig Fontana. It was opened as the Grand Hôtel d'Europe (or Jewropeiskaja ) on 28 January 1875. Early 20th century the building was still further enhanced, including an additional floor was built with a large roof terrace.

After the October Revolution in Russia was the hotel, like all other companies, nationalized and served for a time as an administrative building and a hostel for street children. Later it was again converted into a hotel, but only a comparatively modest comfort offered. During the Siege of Leningrad beginning of the 1940s, here a hospital with 1,300 beds was set up. It was only after the war the building was used as a hotel again after a renovation.

1989-1991 the Jewropeiskaja been thoroughly modernized and brought up to a five -star hotel standard. In December 1991, it opened as the Grand Hotel Europe its doors again. Since then, it has around 300 rooms, all located in the top price range and are exclusive apartments. The cheapest room costs the equivalent of about 320 euros per person per night, for the most expensive apartments have to pay up to 3700 euros. In addition, the house offers seven exclusive restaurants. The hotel was at times a member of the Leading Hotels of the World.
