Grand Turk (frigate)

The Étoile de Roy, formerly of Grand Turk, a replica of the three-masted frigate of the British 6th grade to the 18th century, is better known as the HMS Indefatigable from the television series Hornblower. However, the historical Indefatigable was a much larger ship. In the same television series the Étoile de Roy acted as the French ship Papillon. It was built primarily for the international film and television industry.

Today, the tall ship is mainly used for windjammer, the charter by companies or private individuals as well as for social events in the spacious salon or on deck. On June 28, 2005, she represented the HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship at the International Fleet Review in front of Portsmouth (UK ) on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

Ship Dimensions

The Étoile de Roy is 46.3 meters long and 10.4 meters wide. Your main mast is 35.66 meters high, the depth is 3.1 meters. She has two diesel engines with 450 hp ( 340 kW ) and a crew of 16 men.

Rigging

The Étoile de Roy is rigged as a full-rigged ship and carries twelve sails. The foremast and mainmast carry three square sails. The mizzen mast carries a Rahtopsegel and including a gaff sail. The bowsprit carries two jibs. A figurehead adorns the bow.

Shipyard and construction

The Étoile de Roy was built in 1996 in Marmaris in Turkey; the production costs amounted to two million British pounds. This is an authentic replica on the basis of historical drawings of the frigate HMS Blandford from in 1741. On deck she is wearing cast- iron cannon smoothbore.

Frigates were not large enough and not sufficiently heavily armed in the 18th century to fight in the keel line. My mission was primarily to act as scouts for the fleet to support this, if necessary, or to deliver messages.

The ship from Grand Turk was renamed to Étoile du Roy in March 2010 and is operated at the charter company Etoile Marine Croisières ..
