Granja do Torto

Granja do Torto The Palácio da Alvorada is next to one of the official residences of the President of Brazil.

The name has its origin in the " Fazenda do Riacho Torto " in Brasília, on whose territory the Granja do Torto is located. The first person the Granja do Torto which was inhabited Iris Meinberg, one of the directors of Companhia Urbanizadora da Nova Capital ( Novacap ), public institution that was responsible for the planning and construction of the new capital.

Novacap had determined that their four directors should live in facilities that were intended for the supply of the Federal District. After the inauguration of Brasília, the residences of the government should be made available so the Granja do Torto was one of the residences of the President.

On the grounds of the Granja do Torto, a poultry farm is built to provide Brasília with eggs and poultry meat.

Due to its rural character, the Granja do Torto is used by most presidents as a country residence, but the President João Figueiredo used it as a principal residence.
