Grant Mitchell (actor)

John Grant Mitchell Jr. ( born June 17, 1874 in Columbus, Ohio; † May 1, 1957 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American actor.

Life

Grant Mitchell was the son of a Civil War General John G. Mitchell (1838-1894) was born. His great-uncle was U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes. After graduating at Harvard University, he became a lawyer and until the age of 27 he made his stage debut. Since 1906, Mitchell worked on Broadway, where he played for decades leading roles. However, until 1930, he had only two film appearances, first with the talkies, he was also successful here. He was both rigorous and bad-tempered play as goofy or overtaxed figures, mostly fathers and high -ranking personalities. Mitchell played in a lot of B- movies, but on the other hand he also had appearances in several classics. The character actor appeared as Egeus as in A Midsummer Night's Dream, one of the senators in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington as well as a pastor in Arsenic and Old Lace.

In 1948, he finished his career. He had played in more than 125 films, rarely without a role name in the credits was there. Mitchell had never been married and had no children when he died at the age of 82 years in 1957.
