Granular poison frog

Oophaga granulifera

The Granulated Woodcreeper ( Oophaga granulifera ) is a species of the family of the poison dart frog ( Dendrobatidae ).

Features

The little frogs reach a body length of 18-22 millimeters. Your skin is structured grainy. In general, the back and the upper arms are colored bright orange. The abdomen, forearms and hind legs are colored green to blue-green. The vocal sac of the male is black. The population that lives in the vicinity of the town of Quepos, has an olive -colored backs.

Occurrence

The animals are found in the south-west to the south-west of Panama from Costa Rica. They are especially common in the low mountains near Puntarenas up to an altitude of about 700 meters above sea level. They live in moist forests of the lowlands on the Pacific coast, where dieffenbachia grow. The species was introduced into a small adjacent region in the southeast of Costa Rica on the Atlantic coast of Panama.

Way of life

Like most species of poison dart frog lives of Granulated Baumsteiger diurnal on the ground. The animals usually stay close to tree trunks. The tadpoles are carried by the females to water-filled leaf axils of dieffenbachia. As all the species the larvae feed oophag: The females lay unfertilized eggs that are eaten by the larvae. In the dry season from January to April females are very rare to find, retrieve only the males. The females only come in the rainy season to the fore.
