Grapeland is a city in Houston County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located 20 km north of Crockett, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 287 to the Farm Road 227, in the north of the county, in east-central Texas and has a total area of 5.1 km ² without significant water surface.

History

The town initially served as a postal collection point for the area and was called to 1873 Grapevine. The opening of a post office, the place in Grapeland was renamed as a place of the same name already existed. 1872 moved the Houston and Great Northern Railroad Company transferred its tracks through this area and built at this point a railroad depot. Of the 583 households 27.8 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.1 % were married couples living together. 19.2% were single mothers and 35.2 % were non-families. 34.3 % of all households were single-person households, and 20.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size amounted to 3.08.

26.4 % of the population were under 18 years old, 7.1 % from 18 to 24, 21.2% 25-44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 24.6 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 79.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 71.7 males.

The median income for a household was $ 22,361, and the median income for a family $ 30,250. Males have a median income of $ 26,964 versus $ 18,906 for females.
