Houston County (Texas)
The Houston County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Crockett. The county is one of the so-called Dry County, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located in East Texas, about 90 km from the border with Louisiana, and has an area of 3203 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Anderson County, Cherokee County, Angelina County, Trinity County, Walker County, Madison County, and Leon County.
History
Houston County was formed in 1837 from parts of Nacogdoches County. It was named for Samuel Houston, one of the most important figures in the history of Texas and Governor.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 23,185 people in the Houston County. Of these, 2,999 people lived in collective centers, the other residents living in 8,259 households and 5,756 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 68.57 percent White, 27.93 percent Black or African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 2.17 percent from other races groups; 0.76 percent were descended from two or more races. 7.50 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 8,259 households out of which 28.7 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 51.9 percent were married couples living together, 14.2 percent were single mothers and 30.3 percent were non-families. 27.9 percent of all households and 15.1 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.97.
23.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.8 percent between 18 to 24, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44, 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 114.1 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 115.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 28,119, and the median income for a family was $ 35,033. Males have a median income of $ 29,143, women $ 19,885. The per capita income was $ 14,525. 15.6 percent of families and 21.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
