Houston County (Texas)

The Houston County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Crockett. The county is one of the so-called Dry County, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in East Texas, about 90 km from the border with Louisiana, and has an area of ​​3203 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Anderson County, Cherokee County, Angelina County, Trinity County, Walker County, Madison County, and Leon County.

History

Houston County was formed in 1837 from parts of Nacogdoches County. It was named for Samuel Houston, one of the most important figures in the history of Texas and Governor.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 23,185 people in the Houston County. Of these, 2,999 people lived in collective centers, the other residents living in 8,259 households and 5,756 families.
