Mills County (Texas)
The Mills County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Goldthwaite.
Geography
The County is located about 60 km north-east of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 1942 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Comanche County, Hamilton County, Lampasas County, San Saba County and Brown County.
History
Mills County was formed in 1887 from parts of Brown County, Comanche County, Hamilton County and Lampasas County. It was named for John T. Mills, one of the first judges in Texas.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 5,151 people in Mills County in 2001 households and 1,398 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 89.24 percent White, 1.26 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian, 0.08 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 7.73 percent from other races groups; 1.34 percent were descended from two or more races. 13.03 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,001 households out of which 27.5 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 60.2 percent were married couples living together, 7.0 percent were single mothers and 30.1 percent were non-families. 27.8 percent of all households and 17.1 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.90 persons.
25.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 4.7 percent between 18 to 24, 20.5 percent between 25 and 44, 26.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 23.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 102.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,579, and the median income for a family was $ 37,519. Males have a median income of $ 25,933, women $ 20,076. The per capita income was $ 15,915. 12.7 percent of families and 18.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
