Hidalgo County (Texas)
The Hidalgo County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Edinburg.
Geography
The County is located in the south of Texas, on the south by Mexico and the east is about 50 km from the Gulf of Mexico. It has an area of 4099 square kilometers, of which 33 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Brooks County, Kenedy County, Willacy County, Cameron County and Starr County.
History
Hidalgo County was formed in 1852 from parts of Cameron County. It was named after Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, who proclaimed Mexico's independence from Spain.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Hidalgo County 569 463 people in 156 824 households and 132 829 families. The population density was 140 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 77.71 percent White, 0.49 percent African American, 0.42 percent Native American, 0.59 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 18.64 percent from other races groups; 2.12 percent were descended from two or more races. 88.35 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 156 824 households out of which 49.7 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 65.0 percent were married couples living together, 15.7 percent were single mothers and 15.3 percent were non-families. 13.1 percent of all households and 6.3 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 3.60 and the average family size was 3.96 persons.
35.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 11.3 percent between 18 to 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44, 16.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 9.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 27 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 24,863, and the median income for a family was $ 26,009. Males have a median income of $ 21,299, women $ 18,297. The per capita income was $ 9,899. 31.3 percent of families and 35.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
