Coke County, Texas
The Coke County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Robert Lee.
Geography
The County is located about 100 km north-west of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 2403 square kilometers, of which 76 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Nolan County, Runnels County, Tom Green County, Sterling County and Mitchell County.
History
Coke County was formed in 1889 from parts of Tom Green County. It was named for Richard Coke, the fifteenth governor of Texas.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Coke County 3,864 people in 1,544 households and 1,068 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 88.85 percent White, 1.94 percent African American, 0.78 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 6.94 percent from other races groups; 1.40 percent were descended from two or more races. 16.90 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,544 households out of which 27.1 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 58.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.1 percent were single mothers and 30.8 percent were non-families. 29.0 percent of all households and 18.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.84 persons.
24.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.5 percent between 18 to 24, 20.5 percent between 25 and 44, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 24.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 100 males and 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,085, and the median income for a family was $ 36,724. Males have a median income of $ 30,778, women $ 19,596. The per capita income was $ 16,734. 9.7 percent of families and 13.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
