Limestone County (Texas)
The Limestone County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Groesbeck.
Geography
The County is located north-east of the geographic center of Texas, about half way to Louisiana and Arkansas. It has an area of 2417 square kilometers, of which 63 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Navarro County, Freestone County, Leon County, Robertson County, Falls County, McLennan County and Hill County.
History
Limestone County was formed in 1846 from parts of Robertson County.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Limestone County 22,051 people in 7,906 households and 5,652 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 70.75 percent White, 19.07 percent Black or African American, 0.45 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 8.10 percent from other races groups; 1.49 percent were descended from two or more races. 12.97 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,906 households out of which 32.0 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 54.0 percent were married couples living together, 13.5 percent were single mothers and 28.5 percent were non-families. 25.6 percent of all households and 13.8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.04 persons.
25.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.1 percent between 18 to 24, 26.4 percent between 25 and 44, 22.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 103.2 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,366, and the median income for a family was $ 36,924. Males had a median income of $ 28,069, women $ 18,893. The per capita income was $ 14,352. 14.4 percent of families and 17.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
