Goliad County, Texas
The Goliad County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county administration is located in Goliad.
Geography
The County is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas, about 50 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 2226 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: DeWitt County, Victoria County, Refugio County, Bee County and Karnes County.
History
Goliad County was formed in 1836 as an original county. It was named after the Mexican settlement of Goliad.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Goliad County 6,928 people in 2,644 households and 1,975 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 82.62 percent White, 4.82 percent African American, 0.55 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 10.05 percent from other races groups; 1.73 percent were descended from two or more races. 35.20 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,644 households out of which 33.1 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 62.1 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers and 25.3 percent were non-families. 22.8 percent of all households and 11.9 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.02 persons.
25.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.5 percent between 18 to 24, 25.0 percent between 25 and 44, 25.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 98.9 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.1 males.
The median income for a household was $ 34,201, and the median income for a family was $ 40,446. Males have a median income of $ 30,954, women $ 20,028. The per capita income was $ 17,126. 11.9 percent of families and 16.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
