List of counties in Texas

The U.S. state of Texas is divided into 254 counties, more than all other states.

Texas came from areas that were previously under Spanish or Mexican control. Therefore, the local administrative units were called before the proclamation of the Republic of Texas ( 1836) " communities ". 1836 there were 23 such communities, which then became the 23 original counties. The other counties formed usually by removal of one or more of the older counties when the rising population density, this could appear to be necessary ( see column "origin" in the table).

The FIPS code for Texas is 48, ie the individual counties have a code of the form 48XXX, where XXX is replaced by the code of the respective counties.

Non -existent counties

There were at least 32 counties that have been set according to Texan right, but no longer exist. This includes those that were proposed provisionally during the establishment, those whose country no longer belong to Texas or even counties, have changed their names.

A few examples:

  • Buchel County, founded in 1887 from Presidio County. 1897 beaten to Brewster County.
  • Dawson County, founded in 1858 in Kinney County and Uvalde County, disbanded 1866. Not identical with the Dawson County still existent
  • Encinal County founded in 1856. Dissolved in 1899 and beaten to Webb County.
  • Foley County, founded in 1887 from Presidio County. 1897 Brewster County.
  • Greer County founded in 1860. Through the U.S. Supreme Court denied Texas, see United States v. State of Texas. Today part of Oklahoma
  • Perdido County founded in 1824, Lost in the turmoil of the 1840s. Whereabouts and official resolution unclear.
  • Santa Fe County founded in 1848 from countries of Mexico. It included the lands of New Mexico east of the Rio Grande. Resolved by the compromise of 1850.
  • Wegefarth County, founded in 1873 in the Texas Panhandle, disbanded in 1876.
  • Worth County, founded in 1850 from a part of Santa Fe County, resolved by the compromise of 1850.
