Dawson County (Texas)
The Dawson County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lamesa. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located north-west of the geographic center of Texas in Llano Estacado and in the West is about 70 km from New Mexico removed. It has an area of 2336 square kilometers, without significant water surface. The county is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lynn County, Borden County, Martin County, Gaines County and Terry County.
History
Dawson County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County. It was named for Nicholas Mosby Dawson, a soldier during the Texas Revolution.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 14,985 people in Dawson County. Of these, 2,272 people lived in collective centers, the other residents living in 4,726 households, and 3501 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 72.47 percent White, 8.66 percent African American, 0.30 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, and 16.56 percent from other races; 1.77 percent were descended from two or more races. 48.19 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4726 households out of which 35.1 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 59.4 percent were married couples living together. 11.0 percent were single mothers and 25.9 percent were non-families. 23.9 percent of all households and 13.3 percent of families were people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size 3.20 persons.
25.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 to 24, 30.7 percent between 25 and 44, 20.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 124.3 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 129.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 28,211, and the median income for a family was $ 32,745. Males had a median income of $ 27,259, women $ 16,739. The per capita income was $ 15,011. 16.4 percent of families and 19.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
