Caldwell County (Texas)
The Caldwell County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Lockhart.
Geography
The County is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 1418 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Travis County, Bastrop County, Fayette County, Gonzales County, Guadalupe County and Hays County.
History
Caldwell County was formed in 1848 from parts of Bastrop County and Gonzalez County. It was named after Mathew Caldwell, a soldier during the Texas Revolution.
Demographics
According to the census in 2000 lived in Caldwell County 32 194 people in 10,816 households and 8,079 families. The population density was 23 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 70.13 percent White, 8.50 percent African American, 0.61 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 17.66 percent from other races groups; 2.74 percent were descended from two or more races. 40.44 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 10,816 households out of which 37.0 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 56.0 percent were married couples living together, 13.3 percent were single mothers and 25.3 percent were non-families. 21.2 percent of all households and 9.4 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.28 persons.
28.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.5 percent between 18 to 24, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44, 20.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.7 males.
The median income for a household was $ 36,573, and the median income for a family was $ 41,300. Males have a median income of $ 29,295, women $ 21,595. The per capita income was $ 15,099. 10.4 percent of families and 13.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
