Nacogdoches County, Texas
The Nacogdoches County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Nacogdoches.
Geography
The County is located in East Texas, about 40 km from Arkansas and has an area of 2542 square kilometers, of which 90 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Rusk County, Shelby County, San Augustine County, Angelina County and Cherokee County.
History
Nacogdoches County was formed in 1836 as an original county. It was named after the Nacogdoches Indians.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Nacogdoches County 59 203 people in 22,006 households and 14,039 families. The population density was 24 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 75.00 percent White, 16.74 percent Black or African American, 0.39 percent Native American, 0.70 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 5.70 percent from other races groups; 1.41 percent were descended from two or more races. 11.25 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 22,006 households out of which 30.5 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 48.3 percent were married couples living together, 11.8 percent were single mothers and 36.2 percent were non-families. 27.6 percent of all households and 9.3 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.08 persons.
24.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 20.0 percent between 18 to 24, 24.7 percent between 25 and 44, 19.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 93 males and 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 89 men.
The median income for a household in the 28 301 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family was $ 38,347. Males had a median income of $ 29,502, women $ 21,422. The per capita income was $ 15,437. 15.5 percent of families and 23.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
