Donley County, Texas
The Donley County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Clarendon.
Geography
The County is located north- west of the geographic center of Texas in the Texas Panhandle and is located about 130 km to the north and to the east about 50 km from the state of Oklahoma away. In the west it is 150 km to New Mexico. The Donley County has an area of 2417 km ², of which 8 km ² water surface are. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Gray County, Collingsworth County, Hall County, Briscoe County and Armstrong County.
History
Donley County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County. It was named for Stockton P. Donley, one of the first lawyers in Texas.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 3828 people in Donley County. Of these, 203 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 1578 households, and 1057 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.4 percent white, 3.9 percent African American, 0.9 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 2.7 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.9 percent were descended from two or more races. 6.4 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1578 households out of which 24.8 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 56.7 percent were married couples living together, 7.5 percent were single mothers and 33.0 percent were non-families. 31.4 percent of all households and 17.0 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.86 persons.
22.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.8 percent between 18 to 24, 20.6 percent between 25 and 44, 25.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 21.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,006, and the median income for a family was $ 37,287. Males have a median income of $ 24,375, women $ 18,882. The per capita income was $ 15,958. 10.5 percent of families and 15.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
