Delta County (Texas)

The Delta County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Cooperstown. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located north-east of the geographic center of Texas and is in the north about 45 km away from the state of Oklahoma. It has an area of 720 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers of water are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lamar County, Hopkins County, Hunt County and Fannin County.

History

Delta County was formed in 1870 from parts of Hopkins County and Lamar County. It was named after its triangular shape and thus after coming from the Greek " Delta ".

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 5,506 people in Delta County; were counted 2,094 households and 1,461 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.9 percent white, 8.3 percent African American, 0.8 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian, and 1.2 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.7 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.1 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,094 households out of which 30.2 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 56.4 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers and 30.2 percent were non-families. 27.5 percent of all households and 14.7 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.02 persons.

25.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.5 percent between 18 to 24, 25.5 percent between 25 and 44, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males.

The median income for a household was $ 29,094, and the median income for a family was $ 37,925. Males had a median income of $ 31,597, women $ 20,296. The per capita income was $ 15,080. 14.6 percent of families and 17.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
