Live Oak County, Texas
The Live Oak County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in George West.
Geography
The County is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas, about 50 km from the Gulf of Mexico and the Southwest about 100 km from the border with Mexico. It has an area of 2794 square kilometers, of which 110 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Karnes County, Bee County, San Patricio County, Jim Wells County, Duval County, McMullen County and Atascosa County.
History
People live in this area for over 11,000 years. Until the early 1800s the Coahuiltecan Indians were displaced by the Lipan Apaches, other migrant Indians and the Spaniards of the area.
Live Oak County was formed in 1856 from parts of Nueces County and San Patricio County. It was named after the tree under which the petition for the new County was signed.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Live Oak County 12,309 people in 4,230 households and 3,070 families. The population density was 5 people per km ². The racial the population was made up of 87.28 percent White, 2.45 percent African American, 0.41 percent Native Americans, 0.19 percent Asian American, 0.02 percent Pacific Islander, and 7.72 percent from other races; 1.94 percent were descended from two or more races. 38.05 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,230 households out of which 30.9 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 60.1 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers and 27.4 percent were non-families. 23.9 percent of all households and 12.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.00.
22.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.5 percent between 18 to 24, 27.1 percent between 25 and 44, 25.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 122.2 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 129.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 32,057, and the median income for a family was $ 38,235. Males have a median income of $ 30,061, women $ 19,665. The per capita income was $ 15,886. 14.1 percent of families and 16.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
