Ochiltree County, Texas
The Ochiltree County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Perryton. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located in North Texas in the Texas Panhandle, on the border with Oklahoma and has an area of 2378 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Texas County and Beaver County, both in Oklahoma, Lipscomb County, Roberts County and Hansford County.
History
Ochiltree County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County. It was named after William Beck Ochiltree, an early settler and attorney general in Texas. The name goes back to the same Scottish town Ochiltree in the county of East Ayrshire.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Ochiltree County 9006 people in 3261 households and 2488 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.2 White, 0.13 percent African American, 0.94 percent Native American, 0.39 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 8.28 percent from other races groups; 2.40 percent were descended from two or more races. 31.79 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3261 households out of which 40.9 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 64.0 percent were married couples living together, 7.9 percent were single mothers and 23.7 percent were non-families. 21.0 percent of all households and 9.3 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.18 persons.
30.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.4 percent between 18 to 24, 28.7 percent between 25 and 44, 20.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 99.8 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.9 males.
The median income for a household in the 38 013 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family was $ 45,565. Males have a median income of $ 31,558, women $ 19,890. The per capita income was 16,707. 13.0 percent of the population 9.8 percent of families are below the poverty line.
