Aransas County, Texas
The Aransas County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Rockport.
Geography
The County is located in southeast Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 1367 square kilometers, of which 715 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Calhoun County, San Patricio County and Refugio County.
History
Aransas County was formed in 1871 from parts of Refugio County. It was named after Rio Nuestra Senora de Aranzazu, a Spanish outpost in early Texas.
The first Europeans who saw this land was probably Alonso Álvarez de Pineda, who explored the coast of Texas sailed along and thereby also the Aransas Bay in the summer of 1519.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Aransas County 22 497 people in 9,132 households and 6,401 families. The population density was 34 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 87.44 percent White, 1.43 percent African American, 0.58 percent Native American, 2.77 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 5.33 percent from other races groups; 2.39 percent were descended from two or more races. 20.32 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 9,132 households out of which 27.0 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 57.0 percent were married couples living together, 9.4 percent were single mothers and 29.9 percent were non-families. 25.3 percent of all households and 11.6 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.90 persons.
23.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.2 percent between 18 to 24, 23.2 percent between 25 and 44, 27.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 19.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 98.9 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.5 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,702, and the median income for a family was $ 34,915. Males have a median income of $ 31,597, women $ 20,289. The per capita income was $ 18,560. 15.5 percent of families and 19.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
