Stephens County (Texas)
The Stephens County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Breckenridge.
Geography
The County is located about 90 km north of the geographical center of Texas and has an area of 2387 square kilometers, of which 70 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Young County, Palo Pinto County, Eastland County, Shackelford County Throckmorton County.
History
The Stephens County was formed in 1858 from parts of Bosque County. It was named after Alexander Hamilton Stephens, the only Vice-President of the Confederate States of America.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Stephens County 9,674 people in 3,661 households and 2,591 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 86.89 percent White, 2.92 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, 0.29 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 8.15 percent from other races groups; 1.39 percent were descended from two or more races. 14.66 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,661 households out of which 31.2 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 57.3 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers and 29.2 percent were non-families. 26.4 percent of all households and 13.7 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.96.
24.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.1 percent between 18 to 24, 25.6 percent between 25 and 44, 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 103.3 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103 men.
The median income for a household was $ 29,583, and the median income for a family was $ 35,293. Males had a median income of $ 26,421, women $ 21,280. The per capita income was $ 15,475. 12.6 percent of families and 15.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
