Jackson County (Texas)
The Jackson County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Edna.
The County is located in southwest Texas, about 40 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 2220 square kilometers, of which 71 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Colorado County, Wharton County, Matagorda County, Calhoun County, Victoria County and Lavaca County.
According to the census of 2000, there were 14,391 people in Jackson County. Of these, 255 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 5,336 households and 3,889 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 76.49 percent White, 7.64 percent African American, 0.39 percent Native American, 0.39 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 12.65 percent from other races groups; 2.39 percent were descended from two or more races. 24.68 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,336 households out of which 34.7 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 58.2 percent were married couples living together, 10.5 percent were single mothers and 27.1 percent were non-families. 24.2 percent of all households and 12.5 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.15 persons.
27.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.2 percent between 18 to 24, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 35,254, and the median income for a family was $ 42,066. Males have a median income of $ 32,639, women $ 19,661. The per capita income was $ 16,693. 12.2 percent of families and 14.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
