Chambers County (Texas)
The Chambers County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Anahuac.
Geography
The County is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas on the Gulf of Mexico and is part of the Houston - Sugar Land - Baytown Metropolitan Area. It has an area of 2258 square kilometers, of which 706 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Liberty County, Jefferson County, Galveston County and Harris County.
History
Chambers County was formed in 1858 from parts of Jefferson County and Liberty County. It was named after Thomas Jefferson Chambers, an early lawyers in Texas.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 26,031 people in Chambers County; were counted 9,139 households and 7,219 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 81.88 percent White, 9.77 percent African American, 0.48 percent Native American, 0.67 percent Asian, and 6.02 percent from other races; 1.18 percent were descended from two or more races. 10.79 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 9,139 households out of which 40.6 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 65.7 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers and 21.0 percent were non-families. 17.8 percent of all households and 6.7 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.20 persons.
28.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.2 percent between 18 to 24, 29.9 percent between 25 and 44, 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 9.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 100.6 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 47,964, and the median income for a family was $ 52,986. Males have a median income of $ 43,351, women $ 25,478. The per capita income was $ 19,863. 8.3 percent of families and 11.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
