Real County, Texas

The Real County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Leakey.

Geography

The County is located south of the geographic center of Texas, is located in the southwest about 60 km from the border with Mexico and has an area of 1813 square kilometers, without significant water surface. The county is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Edwards County, Kerr County, Bandera County and Uvalde County.

History

Real County was formed in 1913 from parts of Bandera County, Edwards County and Kerr County. It was named after Julius Real, a rancher and the only Republican in the Senate, as the county was formed.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 3,047 people in the real County in 1,245 households and 869 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made ​​up of 91.40 percent White, 0.20 percent African American, 0.62 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 6.01 percent from other races groups; 1.54 percent were descended from two or more races. 22.58 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,245 households out of which 26.5 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 58.4 percent were married couples living together, 7.6 percent were single mothers and 30.2 percent were non-families. 28.2 percent of all households and 14.8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.88.

23.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 5.4 percent between 18 to 24, 21.5 percent between 25 and 44, 28.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 20.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 97.9 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.7 males.

The median income for a household was $ 25,118, and the median income for a family was $ 29,839. Males have a median income of $ 21,076, women $ 18,352. The per capita income was $ 14,321. 17.4 percent of families and 21.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
