Kinney County, Texas
The Kinney County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Brackettville.
Geography
The County is located southwest of the geographic center of Texas, in the southwest on the border with Mexico and has an area of 3356 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Edwards County, Uvalde County, Maverick County and Val Verde County.
History
Kinney County was formed in 1850 from parts of Bexar County. It was named for Henry Lawrence Kinney, an early settler and less successful land speculator.
In County Southerners committed in the Civil War, the massacre of the Nueces River in 1862 to German -born Texans.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 3,379 people in Kinney County. Of these, 23 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 1,314 households, and 940 families. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.8 percent white, 1.7 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian, and 18.6 percent from other ethnic groups; 3.4 percent were descended from two or more races. 50.5 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,314 households out of which 27.2 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 61.8 percent were married couples living together, 6.4 percent were single mothers and 28.4 percent were non-families. 26.6 percent of all households and 16.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.10 persons.
25.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 5.3 percent between 18 to 24, 21.5 percent between 25 and 44, 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 24.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 99.8 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99 men.
The median income for a household was $ 28,320, and the median income for a family was $ 32,045. Males had a median income of $ 26,422, women $ 16,250. The per capita income was $ 15,350. 19.2 percent of families and 24.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
