Polk County (Texas)
The Polk County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Livingston.
Geography
The County is located in East Texas, about 80 km from the border with Louisiana, and has an area of 2874 square kilometers, of which 136 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Angelina County, Tyler County, Hardin County, Liberty County, San Jacinto County and Trinity County.
History
Polk County was formed in 1836 as an original county. It was named after James Knox Polk, the 11th President of the United States.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000, lived in Polk County 41 133 people in 15,119 households and 10,915 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 79.64 percent White, 13.17 percent Black or African American, 1.74 percent Native American, 0.38 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 3.74 percent from other races groups; 1.32 percent were descended from two or more races. 9.39 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 15,119 households out of which 28.8 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 57.9 percent were married couples living together, 10.8 percent were single mothers and 27.8 percent were non-families. 24.6 percent of all households and 12.5 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.95 persons.
22.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.1 percent between 18 to 24, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 108.7 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 109.5 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,495, and the median income for a family was $ 35,957. Males had a median income of $ 30,823, women $ 21,065. The per capita income was $ 15,834. 13.3 percent of families and 17.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
