Lee County (Texas)
The Lee County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas to the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Giddings.
Geography
The County is located southwest of the geographic center of Texas, about halfway to the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 1642 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Milam County, Burleson County, Washington County, Fayette County, Bastrop County and Williamson County.
History
Lee County was formed in 1874 from parts of Bastrop County, Burleson County, Fayette County and Washington County. It was named after Robert E. Lee, commanding general of the Confederate army in the American Civil War.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Lee County 15 657 people in 5,663 households and 4,150 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 76.59 percent White, 12.08 percent Black or African American, 0.46 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 8.87 percent from other races groups; 1.72 percent were descended from two or more races. 18.19 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,663 households out of which 35.7 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 60.0 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers and 26.7 percent were non-families. 23.8 percent of all households and 11.7 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.15 persons.
28.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.2 percent between 18 to 24, 26.3 percent between 25 and 44, 21.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 101.6 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98 men.
The median income for a household was $ 36,280, and the median income for a family was $ 42,073. Males had a median income of $ 30,635, women $ 21,611. The per capita income was $ 17,163. 9.7 percent of families and 11.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
