Freestone County, Texas
The Freestone County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Fairfield.
Geography
The County is located east of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 2311 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Henderson County, Leon County, Limestone County and Navarro County.
History
Freestone County was formed in 1850 from parts of Limestone County. It was named after a region in which there are nearly mineral-free water.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Freestone County 17,867 people in 6,588 households and 4,664 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 75.56 percent White, 18.91 percent Black or African American, 0.37 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 3.90 percent from other races groups; 0.97 percent were descended from two or more races. 8.20 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,588 households out of which 30.3 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 56.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers and 29.2 percent were non-families. 26.4 percent of all households and 13.7 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.98.
23.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 to 24, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 110.5 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 110.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 31,283, and the median income for a family was $ 39,586. Males have a median income of $ 30,633, women $ 19,214. The per capita income was $ 16,338. 9.8 percent of families and 14.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
