Montgomery County (Texas)
The Montgomery County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Conroe.
Geography
The County is located in East Texas, about 100 kilometers from Louisiana in the southeast about 70 km from the Gulf of Mexico and the east and part of the Houston - Sugar Land - Baytown Metropolitan Area. It has an area of 2789 square kilometers, of which 85 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Walker County, San Jacinto County, Liberty County, Harris County, Waller County and Grimes County.
History
Montgomery County was formed in 1837 from parts of Washington County. It was named after Montgomery, the largest settlement, as the county was formed.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 293 768 people in Montgomery County; there were counted 103 296 households and 80 157 families. The population density was 109 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 88.25 percent White, 3.49 percent African American, 0.47 percent Native American, 1.11 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 4.86 percent from other races groups; 1.79 percent were descended from two or more races. 12.65 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 103 296 households out of which 40.6 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 64.2 percent were married couples living together, 9.5 percent were single mothers and 22.4 percent were non-families. 18.3 percent of all households and 6.2 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.83 and the average family size was 3.21 persons.
29.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.0 percent between 18 to 24, 30.6 percent between 25 and 44, 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 8.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.4 males.
The median income for a household was 50,864 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family was $ 58,983. Males have a median income of $ 42,400, women $ 28,270. The per capita income was $ 24,544. 7.1 percent of families and 9.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
