Conroe is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of Montgomery County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located on Interstate 45 almost centrally in Orange County, in southeast Texas, about 100 km from the Gulf in the south of Mexico and has a total area of 98.1 km ², of which 0.2 km ² water surface.

History

The first settlement in this area began around 1830. Was named the city after Isaac Conroe, a woodcutter, who came in 1881 in this area and a sawmill on Stewart's Creek built, with which he supplied the International -Great Northern Railroad with timber, with a small branch line linking its operation with the main line. 1884, the first post office was opened in the sawmill.

Around 1885 extended the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway its network around the track Navasota Montgomery and the wood industry flourished again. 1889, the population had risen to 300, and the town became the county seat. In 1892 there were already five steam-powered mills. In the 30s, the city experienced an oil boom, the population rose to its peak at over 10,000.

The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.33 persons to.

28.1% of the population were under 18 years old, 13.4 % from 18 to 24, 31.6 % 25-44, 17.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.7 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 29 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 101.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 98.9 males.

The median income for a household was $ 34,123, and the median income for a family $ 37,201. Males had a median income of $ 29,468 versus $ 23,025 for females.
