Hemphill County, Texas
The Hemphill County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( County Seat) is in Canadian. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located in North Texas, the Texas Panhandle, on the border with Oklahoma and has an area of 2362 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise in Oklahoma to the following counties: Ellis County and Roger Mills County, Texas: Wheeler County, Roberts County Lipscomb County.
History
Hemphill County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County and Young County. It was named after John Hemphill, a Congress Member of the Confederacy.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Hemphill County 3,351 people in 1,280 households and 948 families. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 87.65 percent White, 1.55 percent African American, 0.72 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 8.48 percent from other races groups; 1.31 percent were descended from two or more races. 15.58 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,280 households out of which 32.7 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 65.2 percent were married couples living together, 5.9 percent were single mothers and 25.9 percent were non-families. 24.4 percent of all households and 12.0 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.98.
28.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.5 percent between 18 to 24, 25.3 percent between 25 and 44, 25.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 101.3 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 35,456, and the median income for a family was $ 42,036. Males have a median income of $ 31,154, women $ 19,423. The per capita income was $ 16,929. 10.9 percent of families and 12.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
