Knox County (Texas)

The Knox County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( County Seat) is in Benjamin. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located north of the geographic center of Texas, about 70 km from the border with Oklahoma and has an area of 2216 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Foard County, Baylor County, Haskell County and King County.

History

Knox County was formed in 1858 from parts of Bexar County and Young County. It was named after Henry Knox, a general in the Texas Revolution War and the first Secretary of War of the United States.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 4,253 people in Knox County; were counted 1,690 households and 1,166 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.4 percent white, 6.9 percent African American, 1.1 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian, 0.1 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 14.8 percent from other races groups; 2.6 percent were descended from two or more races. 25.1 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,690 households out of which 30.7 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 56.0 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers and 31.0 percent were non-families. 29.6 percent of all households and 17.9 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.02 persons.

27.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 5.6 percent between 18 and 24, 22.9 percent between 25 and 44, 21.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 22.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 89.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.8 males.

The median income for a household was $ 25,453, and the median income for a family was $ 30,602. Males have a median income of $ 25,571, women $ 20,865. The per capita income was $ 13,443. 17.1 percent of families and 22.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
