Moore County (Texas)
The Moore County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Dumas.
Geography
The County is located in northwest Texas, the Texas Panhandle, is in the north about 40 miles from Oklahoma and to the west about 50 miles from New Mexico removed. It has an area of 2356 square kilometers, of which 26 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Sherman County, Hutchinson County, Potter County and Hartley County.
History
Moore County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County. It was named after Edwin Ward Moore, commander of the Texas Navy of the Republic of Texas.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Moore County 20,121 people in 6,774 households and 5,331 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 63.93 percent White, 0.69 percent African American, 0.67 percent Native American, 0.86 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 31.20 percent from other races groups; 2.62 percent were descended from two or more races. 47.50 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,774 households out of which 44.8 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 65.1 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers and 21.3 percent were non-families. 18.2 percent of all households and 8.3 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.94 and the average family size was 3.36 persons.
33.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24, 28.4 percent between 25 and 44, 18.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 100.6 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 34,852, and the median income for a family was $ 37,985. Males have a median income of $ 29,843, women $ 19,383. The per capita income was $ 15,214. 10.1 percent of families and 13.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
