Kent County (Texas)
The Kent County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Jayton. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.
Geography
The County is located north-west of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 2339 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Dickens County, Stonewall County, Fisher County, Scurry County and Garza County.
History
Kent County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County and Young County. It was named for Andrew Kent, a defender of the Alamo.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Kent County 859 people in 353 households and 247 families. The population density was 0 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 95.46 percent White, 0.23 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, and 3.73 percent from other races; 0.23 percent were descended from two or more races. 9.08 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 353 households out of which 26.1 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 61.2 percent were married couples living together, 5.9 percent were single mothers and 30.0 percent were non-families. 28.0 percent of all households and 14.2 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.83 persons.
20.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 5.4 percent between 18 to 24, 21.8 percent between 25 and 44, 26.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 25.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 47 years. For every 100 females there were 91.7 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.6 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,433, and the median income for a family was $ 35,568. Males have a median income of $ 23,875, women $ 20,000. The per capita income was $ 17,626. 9.2 percent of families and 10.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
