Lavaca County, Texas
The Lavaca County is a county located in the state of Texas in the United States. The seat of the county government ( county seat ) is located in Hallettsville.
Geography
The County is located in southeast Texas and is about 80 km from the Gulf of Mexico. It has an area of 2513 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Fayette County, Colorado County, Jackson County, Victoria County, DeWitt County and Gonzales County.
History
Lavaca County was formed in 1842 from parts of Colorado County, Fayette County, Gonzales County, Jackson County and Victoria County. It was named for the Lavaca River.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Lavaca County 19,210 people in 7,669 households and 5,391 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 86.86 percent White, 6.79 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 4.84 percent from other races groups; 1.14 percent were descended from two or more races. 11.36 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,669 households out of which 30.0 per cent of children or young people who lived with them. 57.7 percent were married couples living together, 9.3 percent were single mothers and 29.7 percent were non-families. 27.6 percent of all households and 16.6 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.98.
24.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.9 percent between 18 and 24, 23.5 percent between 25 and 44, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 21.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 93.1 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.5 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,132, and the median income for a family was $ 36,760. Males have a median income of $ 26,988, women $ 17,537. The per capita income was $ 16,398. 10.2 percent of families and 13.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
